Details are extremely sketchy at this point and I'm not a speculator, so I won't. All that is currently reported is a BA B777 inbound from PEK (Beijing) landed very short (in the grass short of 27L). For those of you currently working in the industry, any more info you can gather would be great.

Reports now saying landed as much as 300 meters short of the runway, damage to gear and wings, evacuating via slides, only minor injuries. Currently sitting on the 27L piano keys.

Both sets of main gear punctured up through the wings, looks like the aircraft may have to be written off. If I'm mistaken, first such incident for the B777 fleet?

Too me its sad when you see a great piece of equipment like the 777 being written off before its time. Heck I hate seeing all those jets sitting in the desert.

Amen to that...there are conflicting reports that pilot declared emergency, 45 degree bank angle on approach, engine out, etc. We'll just have to wait until they get everything sorted out before we know for sure.

Poor bird. I do believe you're right Dan, I think this is the first incident involving a 777.

I'm going out on a limb here. Significant wing damage. No explosion. He was out of fuel?

My money is on fuel exhaustion. From what I've read (go to BBC, great graphics and pics), the captain said loss of thrust and avionics. The subsequent crash landing with no fire looks a lot like the Avianca crash near JFK.

Just my two cents

Reports say the weather wasn't horrible, but not great (low ceiling). I'm going to bet on fuel exhaustion too....someone wasn't doing their job monitoring the fuel consumption.

Just an educated guess....can't wait to see the official report.

Thanks for all the pics, folks.

Same here, I would really like to know why it ran out of fuel.

Just read an article from a British newspaper. The captain confirmed total loss of engine power and electrics/avionics on final. According to the other crew on the flight deck, he said "I'll just have to glide it in". Not considering whose fault the fuel problem might have been, this pilot showed amazing calm and skill getting the plane to the ground and should be praised for his efforts in landing the plane.

So does this mean that he ran out of fuel or is it that there was a complete system failure that caused the engines to quit?
