With the June 2006 numbers in NW is approaching a 25% market share at IND. Their share for June was 24.4% bringing their yearly market share to 23.3% . With their expanding schedule they should be able to break through 25% in a month by the end of the year. YTD they are 10.3 points ahead of the 2nd largest airline which is Southwest at 13%.

I'm surprised Southwest does *THAT* much business from Indianapolis, to be honest.

This probably belongs under the Southwest section, but I wonder why that is.
The airline hasn't really given a lot of attention to the city and pretty much keeps a mediocre operation here since the whole Qwik-et fiasco in the early 1990's.

Then again Southwest does serve the top markets nonstop, which I am sure keeps the planes full. With ATA gone, there isn't much choice if everyone's already riding out there on Northwest. And as we have figured out, NWA does terrific load factors.

Perhaps I just answered my own question?

Perhaps, but you have to take into consideration that every one of Southwest's flights is a 737, while the other airlines range from 757 which isn't a whole lot bigger, to the much smaller regional jet. So thats probably an average of more people per flight than some of the competition, which would raise the market share, right?

Why do my favorite airlines end up going defunct??

What was the Qwik-et fiasco?

In the mid to early 1990's, Southwest started a "Qwiket" machine...basically a machine that sat in front of the ticket counters....a prelume to do today's "kiosks" we frequently see at the airport. I am not sure if you could make advance reservations or what not, but if you were not checking any bags, instead of going to the ticketing counter, you would go to the "Qwiket" machine and get your boarding zone number....and boarding pass.

The Indianapolis Airport Authority did not like the way the machine looked and refused to allow Southwest to have the service. Southwest took digs at the airport....when Southwest wanted to tell you about the new service on their published schedule and when you called the 1-800-number and were placed on hold.

The airport took digs at the airline by making it difficult for them to obtain a third gate and thus began a series of toss backs.

That's interesting, I'd never heard that, and it pre-dates my residency in Indy. Is there more to the story? Was it really just that the airport authority didn't like the look of the machines? Was this before BAA ran the airport?

Can I get a peanut crumb with that thimble of Coke?
