Does anyone know when AirTran started using their own catering service here? I noticed it tonight at the airport while in the food court. I was looking at a 737 at gate C1 and the catering truck wasn't the usual Gate Gourmet. It was an AirTran vehicle. With the exception of the fuel trucks all the vehicles were AirTran vehicles.

Hmm, it seems interesting that a low-cost wouldn't contract out. Does anyone else have their own catering anymore?

Why do my favorite airlines end up going defunct??

That IS interesting. I haven't seen an airline-specific catering operation anywhere in the U.S. or Europe in quite a while. It's always either Gate Gourmet or LG SkyChefs or a couple of others. I have to imagine that they wouldn't do this unless they planned on a significant presence here, otherwise they just wouldn't have the scale to make the operation efficient.

Can I get a peanut crumb with that thimble of Coke?

AirTran has been doing their own catering here for nearly a year.

I believe the truck only has basics (they do not serve meals, right?).

A number of low cost airlines have trucks like AirTran's in IND (including SW in a number of cities). They restock the cans of soda, add bags of the pretzels or peanuts, pull the garbage and refresh any other needs (napkins, cups, ice, etc.).

MUCH cheaper to do it this way than pay Sky Chef.
