Fedex today announced a $200 million dollar expansion of their hub at Indianapolis International Airport. The expansion will include up to 14 new gates brining the total to 75 and a significant expansion of the sorting facility as well as a 2nd sorting facility.

"As part of its plans, FedEx will build a 400,000-square-foot expansion to its existing cargo sorting facility and build a new 175,000 square-foot secondary sorting building. Two maintenance buildings â?? including a 40,000-square-foot facility for aircraft maintenance and an 8,000-square-foot facility for ground support equipment â?? also will be built. In all, its Indianapolis presence will grow by 600,000 square feet. Construction is expected to begin soon and the expanded system is expected to be operational by December 2008.

The expansion will increase package-processing capacity more than 30 percent, from 75,000 packages per hour to 99,000 packages per hour."

I wonder if the expansion is related to this story from 2004?

"China is shaping up as a major growth front for FedEx Corp., and the parcel delivery company's Indianapolis hub could be at the center of a strategy to increase that sector.

FedEx officials at the company's Memphis, Tenn., headquarters are talking with city officials about making its Indianapolis International Airport facility the logistics hub for all cargo traffic to and from China, according to several sources."

Additional note: The expansion will bring the total sort space at the Fedex hub to approximately 1.7 million square feet. In 1997 the Memphis hub had 1.8 million square feet.

"Already the second largest facility in the FedEx system (behind the 1.8 million sq ft Memphis facility),"

That is a quote from a 1997 story on the expansion of the IND hub that doubled the size at the time to 1.1 million square feet. Notice something similar? The expansion then was $210 million which is about the same as today's announcement. Jobs added were 1000. Today's announcement was for 800. Expansion was approximately 500,000 to 600,000 square feet. The expansion announced today was for 575,000.

Has this construction began? When I was at the airport this summer, all I saw was the new terminal construction.

Why do my favorite airlines end up going defunct??

When i flew back from SCE/IAD on Sept. 25, i could have sworn that i saw a bunch of ground dug up next to the fedex building. So maybe they are starting it now. Anyone else care to chime in?

I drove past it on I-70 a week or so ago, and I could see earthmoving equipment scratching around. So I'd say yes, the expansion has already begun. In fact, it looks as if it began at least 4-5 weeks ago.

Can I get a peanut crumb with that thimble of Coke?
